ADFC-Fahrradklima-Test

ADFC-Fahrradklima-Test (FKT)

What is the FKT?

The FKT is one of the world's largest surveys on cycling satisfaction. It measures how happy cyclists in Germany are with the cycling conditions in their local area. In 2026, it is taking place for the twelfth time, running from 1 September to 30 November 2026.

The survey asks a simple but powerful question: Is cycling in your town fun — or is it stressful?

Participants rate their local cycling infrastructure and conditions across a range of criteria, providing direct, real-world feedback from everyday cycling experts — to traffic planners and political decision-makers. Results help municipalities:

  • Compare themselves to other towns and cities
  • Identify their strengths and weaknesses
  • Take targeted action to improve local cycling conditions
  • Evaluate the success of cycling promotion measures

The FKT is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport as part of Germany's National Cycling Plan (Nationaler Radverkehrsplan).

Three Surveys in One

The FKT brings together three separate surveys, making local cycling friendliness visible from multiple angles:

1. FKT

The core survey, open to all adult cyclists. Participants rate cycling conditions in their town — from the state of cycle paths to road safety, infrastructure, and attitudes between road users.

2. FKT Jugendliche (New in 2026!)

Brand-new for 2026: the FKT Jugendliche specifically targets 10- to 20-year-olds. For the first time, young people are asked directly about their cycling habits and experiences:

  • How often do they cycle?
  • How do they feel about cycling?
  • Who in their environment cycles?
  • What would make them feel safer?
  • What would need to change for them to cycle at all?

The survey runs from 1 September to 30 November 2026. Free promotional materials (posters, postcards, social media templates) will be made available for parents, teachers, and coaches to encourage participation.

3. FKT Kommunen

A survey for local government representatives, in which municipalities document their own efforts to promote cycling:

  • What resources are being deployed locally?
  • What mobility concepts and strategies are in place?
  • What measures for cycling promotion and organisational development have been taken?

In 2024, 730 towns and cities participated — including over 95% of all large cities. Results are published as city-specific fact sheets, accessible via an interactive map.

2026 Focus Topic: Mobility of Children & Young People

The special focus theme for the 2026 edition is "Mobility of Children and Young People". This theme runs across all three surveys and reflects growing interest in how the next generation experiences cycling — and what would encourage more young people to get on their bikes.

Previous Editions

The FKT has been conducted regularly since 2005. In the most recent edition in 2024, 213,000 cyclists participated across 1,047 towns and cities. The results of the 2026 Fahrradklima-Test will be published in Spring 2027. For results of the previous FKTs see here.

Evaluation Requirements

To ensure statistically robust results, minimum participation thresholds apply:

  • For city size up to 100,000 residents: Minimum responses are 50
  • For city size between 100,000 and 200,000 residents: Minimum responses are 75
  • For city size over 200,000 residents: Minimum responses are 100
  • Towns with 30–49 responses are evaluated but their results are not statistically reliable and do not factor into overall rankings.
